Flaming Lips #Spotify Playlist: I Remember A Broken Radio
#OPS #Spotify Playlists: The Flaming Lips
Once a week, I put out a #Spotify Playlist that mixes genres and time periods.I call these "Pirate Transmission #Spotify Playlists."
Once a month I put out a special playlist highlighting one artist that really matters to me. So far I have highlighted: The Cure, The Hold Steady, and R.E.M.
This month I am highlighting The Flaming Lips.
I moved to Oklahoma before Junior High (from NYC by way of Tennessee) and the Lips were kind of our hometown band (yes, I lived in Tulsa and they were from OKC but whatever, I saw them a LOT of times). The Lips are kind of like our deranged Beatles (Oklahomans).
They are capable of such strange beauty and so much sonic fury.
I am covering so many years I had to make cuts, this could have been a five-hour playlist otherwise. It is mostly in a kind of chronological order (with one exception). I did try to arrange the songs sonically within that constraint.
Just so you know, I have not listened to anything much from them post "The W.A.N.D." (from At War With The Mystics). I know they did some stuff with Miley Cyrus but I have no idea if it is any good.
"I Remember A Broken Radio"
That is about 75% of my favorite Flaming Lips songs. One very important song that I feel bad about leaving out is "Jesus Shooting Heroin" which only got cut because it is over 7 minutes long. It is a very important song in the FL canon IMO.
I could have included the entire Soft Bulletin album and was short of Yoshimi as well. Mea Culpa.
Anyway, that is the "I Remember A Broken Radio Playlist"
I hope it provides a great overview of the extensive catalog of one of my all-time favorite bands.
What did you think of the playlist?
What other songs by the Lips do you love?
