Josh's Digital Bin #20
Josh's Digital Bin
Would you mind if I helped you find some new music?
The idea is to present music as a process of exploration. So, I started these digital bins, where I put albums that are even more underground than the rest of the stuff I normally review.
Old F*ckers like me used to go to these places called "record stores" and dig through bins often choosing "albums" when we had no idea of what they would actually sound like. We would look at the covers, check out the band picture, look at the names of songs, and just make our best guesses.
Most record stores had discount bins where you could really afford to take some shots in the dark. I think of this space exactly like that, not that the artists don't deserve more attention than a discount bin but that they are worthy of being found.
Found music is more fun IMHO, so explore, enjoy, and celebrate new music.
Evil II
This is a compilation of songs that range from nightmarish to noise. While listening, sometimes I felt like I was in a Michael Mann movie and others like I was in a David Lynch movie (some interesting hip-hop too). If you like to explore a bunch of sonic spaces with the lights low and your earphones on, this would be a great album for you to check out!
Gone In 60 Seconds Vol. 3
Okay, this is a compilation from my friends at "I Heart Noise" which features several artists you have probably seen here before, but the catch is that all of the songs are only a minute or less long. Lots of cool experimental stuff here, my favorite track might be the typically bizarre Odorbaby song. The good news, like a song or hate it, you only have to wait 60 seconds until the next artist starts.
Benta
This is a single from Benta. His Twitter account and my Twitter account are friends and he RT's lots of my stuff. I had no idea he did music too, then one day I looked at his profile and saw a link. This was the result. It reminds me a bit of Mas Ysa which, IMHO, is a very good thing. Give it a listen.
Sex Stains
This is Allison Wolfe's (of Bratmobile) new band. I was a huge fan of Bratmobile and of almost all of the other Riot Grrrl bands. Sex Stains combines Allison, a second singer, great thoughtful (often) political lyrics, with a great post-punk groove. Lots of fun.
NOTS
I found NOTS a few years ago digging around the interwebs (Like I find most bands). I have been waiting patiently for this album for a LONGGGGGGG time. Start out with No Novelty and you will understand why I was so excited for this album to finally be released. NOTS straight up kick ass..
Okay, that is the end of my 20th Digital bin.
As usual, I am finishing it late at night, so I am tired.
What was your favorite 60-second song?
What was your favorite artist in the bin this week?
