10 Things I Hated About Season 6 of Game of Thrones: #5 The Blackfish

Yup It Is Me "The Season 6 Diabolical Hater" of #GoT

Were you convinced that Season 6 of GoT was pure greatness?

Not me.

So, over the next 5 days, I am going to post the remaining 5 things that drove me crazy about Game of Thrones Season 6.

I fully realize that I am in the minority on this but I am okay with people disagreeing with me. I also don't usually write because of ego or certainty that I am right.

In fairness, I did enjoy much of Season 6 but every time I started really enjoying things another Benioff and Weiss "consolidation" problem would appear on the show. I really don't mind Benioff and Wiess taking a different route to GRRM's conclusions, my problem is when the shortcuts undermine the logic of the characters and plot.

The picture of Jar Jar is a reference to giving out Jar Jar awards throughout Season 6.

I really don't hate season 6 btw (my point is that it isn't one of the strongest seasons).

The Blackfish & Suicide by Swordfight

While Brynden Tully aka “The Blackfish” (Clive Russell) has not been featured very much on the television show, he is a legendary fighter and capable battle strategist in the books.

One of the many differences between the books and the show is that the battle for Riverrun depicted in season 6 of the show actually happened much earlier in the timeline in the books and did not result in Tully virtually committing suicide (by unnecessary sword fight).

Generally, characters can be expected to act either in their own self-interest, in a heroic manner (to save someone else), or as a villain. But, for some unexplained reason, instead of leaving Riverrun with Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) as she had arranged with Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) or instead of leaving Riverrun with Brienne after Edmure (Tobias Menzies) surrenders the castle without a fight Brynden decides to engage in a pointless death by swordfight.

There is literally no discernible motive for his literally suicidal choice. The closest I could come to making sense of his death was that he was being “stubborn.”

A pointless end to a legendary character.
