10 Things I Hated About Season 6 of Game of Thrones: #4 Umber's Gift

Yup It Is Me That Seriously Conflicted Fan of #GoT

Were you convinced that Season 6 of GoT was pure greatness?

Not me.

So, over the next 5 days, I am going to post the remaining 4 things that drove me crazy about Game of Thrones Season 6. Scroll down to get right to #4.

I fully realize that I am in the minority on this but I am okay with people disagreeing with me. I also don't usually write because of ego or certainty that I am right.

In fairness, I did enjoy much of Season 6 but every time I started really enjoying things another Benioff and Weiss "consolidation" problem would appear on the show. I really don't mind Benioff and Wiess taking a different route to GRRM's conclusions, my problem is when the shortcuts undermine the logic of the characters and plot.

The picture of Jar Jar is a reference to giving out Jar Jar awards throughout Season 6.

I really don't hate season 6 btw (my point is that it isn't one of the strongest seasons).

The Mostly Invisible Logic of Smalljon Umber

If you have read the books, Ramsay (Iwan Rheon) is not just mildly disliked by the people of the North, he is LOATHED by the people of the North. It is not just that he is a Bolton (well known for flaying people) or that he is the bastard son of Roose (Northmen are superstitious and don't like even legitimized Bastards much less a Bolton Bastard), the hate Ramsay for being Ramsay.

The stories of Ramsay's brutality and sickness are legendary throughout the North.

It is not that much different on the television show. The North cares about loyalty, honor, and tradition and Ramsay is the literal antithesis of everything the North loves.

Oh, and the North also mostly LOVES the Stark family.

Despite this he is approached by Smalljohn Umber (Dean S. Jagger), after the death of Greatjohn Umber (at the hands of the Starks), to join forces to fight the combined Stark and wildling forces.

Not only that, but Littlefinger brings Ramsay a present in the form of the long missing Rickon Stark (brother of Bran, Sansa, Arya, and half-brother of Jon Snow kinda).

Yes, I get that Littlejohn would want revenge on the Stark’s for what the late Rob Stark did to his Father...But, it is very unlikely that he would either align his family with the hated Bolton’s or turn over the sole male Stark heir (nobody knows Bran is alive) to the Bolton’s. Why would he make his family hated for generations in the North when he could just sit it out instead?

Plus, it was incredibly fortuitous.

Getting Rickon almost immediately after losing Sansa (Sophie Turner)?

Too lucky to be believed.

Look at it this way, nobody has been able to reunite the Stark family for six seasons, but Ramsay loses one Stark and gets another delivered within weeks of each other.

Sorry, I am officially calling BS here.

One other thing, what does it say about us that of all the thousands of things that could get attention about Sophie Turner after GoT (like that her performances are really great or that she has a new movie etc), every single publication that you can imagine wrote a story about her changing hair color last week (not attaching a link on purpose)? BTW, I get that her team probably posted the hair change, but do we have to all cover this crap (which came first the coverage or the marketing strategy)?
